The most common type of engraving is front engraving. This process leaves permanent text and/or graphics directly on the surface of the material being engraved. For common items (pet tags, name badges, desk plates, etc.) this is the most economical type of engraving and is used in thousands of everyday applications everywhere.
Another type of engraving is reverse engraving. This process is used to achieve a smooth front surface.
Reverse engraving leaves permanent text and/or graphics on the back, or reverse side, of the material. These text/graphics can then be painted any color(s) you wish. This leaves the front side as clear plastic with a smooth surface and colored text / graphics.
Yet another type of engraving is relief engraving or as some people like to call it engraving in relief. This can be done on either front or reverse engravable plastic. This process usually involves some sort of graphic "enclosure" (a cicle, ellipse, rectangle etc.) with text and or another graphic inside it. The inside text/graphic is left completely alone and what is engraved away is everything else inside the "enclosure". This works well for interior and exterior applications when you need or want to have the inside text/graphic the same color as the signage itself.
